Biography & History
Cindy attends Blueford High School where she is a 15-year old teenage African American freshman. She lives with her mother Lorraine who makes a living as a waitress (It is possible she lives in the projects). Cindy's father could've even passed away or him and her mother could have been divorced as he is not mentioned. She lives in a wheckless and unclean house. Cindy's friends are Grandma Davis, Jamee, Amberlyn, Darcy and Herold. Cindy goes through neglection with her mother and her boyfriend Raffie Whitaker's teasing. She then finds supposed love and trust in Bobby Wallace (who in secret, is a drug dealer) who last year beat up her best friend Jamee. However, Bobby starts acting violent and Cindy later discovers he is still on drugs. Things get better for Cindy in the end when her mother takes her advice and when Grandma Davis shows her love and affection.
Personality
Cindy is stubborn without a shadow of a doubt (a trait she inherited from her mother). She has low self-esteem about herself due to her appearence, though she is very pretty. Cindy is also kind and understanding, as when she helped Jamee when she got beat up by her ex-boyfriend Bobby Wallace. Had not her best friend Jamee pushed her to go to school she would've been a drop out. She also has poor attendance due to so many absenses from school.
Cindy also seems to carefree and reluctant, but she is very cautious of her surroundings and can sense when trouble is ahead. She suffers loneliness due to her mother's working hours and spending more time with Raffie rather then her, which eventually makes Cindy feel as if her mother didn't love her. Cindy is shown to care deeply for others though her thick-headedness can often get in the way of this. At school, Cindy feels that she doesn't fit in with the other students. In the book it is revealed that the only people she hangs around with are her friends, Jamee, Darcy and Amberlyn. Harold, her neighbor, also has a crush on her which is hinted in the middle of the book. Cindy said she would go out with him but felt that Bobby was the one. It is also revealed that she is a good cartoonist as said in the beginning of the book. It is also reaved that she has been drawing since kindergarden. She keeps a scrapbook of her drawings.
